OVERNIGHT UPDATE
KHERSON FALLS: Ukrainian officials overnight confirmed the country’s southern port of Kherson has fallen to Russian forces, as huge explosions were heard in the center of Kyiv in the early hours. Local authorities also reported more civilian deaths in missile strikes in Ukraine’s second city Kharkiv throughout the night. Western officials believe the developments at the end of the first week of the war show Russian President Vladimir Putin is increasing the level of violence as his military campaign stalls. But despite the embarrassing setbacks, Russian troops are now encircling several key cities, with Mariupol particularly isolated, raising the prospect that they could be besieged for several weeks.
