Despite the alleged crackdown on misleading adverts by the FCA, a day does not go by where I can avoid some sort of promotion on cryptocurrencies, or their trading. If I put to one side that no other currency attracts the level of advertising revenue that cryptocurrencies do (and why does a “digital money” need an ad campaign?) I’m left to wonder what the future of cryptocurrencies will be.
For background, I had early exposure to cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin specifically, as I temporarily replaced the old SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) application on my PCs with a mining program. In the nascent days of Bitcoin, I understood enough that, whilst it was interesting to turn my computer over to processing the huge quantities of data that Earth’s telescopes generated, “mining” Bitcoin had the potential to be more lucrative.
As I learnt more, however, I abandoned this project as it seemed the only people enthusiastic about cryptocurrency was those who wanted to hide their transactions from others: criminals, specifically on the “dark web” and money…
