CASH-strapped Police Scotland’s bid to become the first UK force to switch to eco cop cars has been hit by SNP-Green Budget cuts, it emerged earlier.
The national force faces a near £50 million shortfall next year for spending on things like vehicles, technology, and forensics after its “capital” allowance was frozen.
Official documents cast doubt on whether it can now afford to convert its entire fleet to ultra-low emission vehicles by 2030 as planned.
The details sparked claims that the Scottish Government’s “talks a good game on the environment” but “fails to deliver in reality”.
The shortfalls emerged from a Police Scotland document drawn up ahead of Holyrood Finance Secretary Kate Forbes’s Budget earlier this month.
It showed that £93.6 million was needed in 2022-23 for “capital” spending, including £17.8 million for vehicle fleet upgrades.
