Children from deprived areas are likely to benefit from Labour’s free breakfast clubs first, i can reveal.
During the opening day of the Labour Party conference, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed Labour’s manifesto policy to fund free breakfast clubs across England would start with a trial of 750 primary schools from April.
Hundreds of state-funded primary schools will be invited to sign up for the “early adopter scheme” which will run in the summer term from April to July 2025.
This means thousands of children will have early access to the scheme, intended to address child poverty and reduce absence rates.
The new scheme will be on top of the current national school breakfast programme which offers all pupils in participating schools free breakfast supplies.
A Labour source told i that the schools chosen to partake in the trial period are likely to be in the areas with the greatest need.
They said that choosing the right schools involved thinking about making “interventions that deliver on the commitment of breaking down barriers to opportunity”.
