Transport Secretary Grant Shapps is set to announce an overhaul to Covid travel rules today, with the traffic light system set to be scrapped.
The new system is reported to be simpler. The green and amber lists are expected to be merged to form one category of low-risk countries, while the number of destinations on the red list will be reduced.

When is Grant Shapps’ announcement?
There is currently no set time for the Transport Secretary’s update. Ministers are expected to meet first to finalise the rules in the afternoon, with the announcement likely to come shortly after.
Travel updates have normally been on Wednesdays or Thursdays every three weeks – normally between 5-8pm – but this week’s has been delayed until Friday due to the cabinet reshuffle.
Announcements are not normally televised, with changes to the green, amber and red lists instead being shared on Mr Shapps’ social media accounts.
