Swansea City were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage over Southampton who progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a dramatic 3-2 win over Russell Martin’s side.
The Saints took the lead through Nathan Redmond before having Yan Valery sent off after just half an hour.
Swansea struggled to create chances but took the game to extra time courtesy of Joel Piroe’s 13th goal of the campaign late on.
They went ahead during the early stages of a frantic period in the first half of extra time as Olivier Ntcham’s driven effort was deflected in off Jan Bednarek.
But substitutes Mohamed Elyounoussi and Shane Long struck in quick succession as the Premier League side emerged victorious after playing more than 90 minutes with just 10 men.
Despite the club’s Covid-19 concerns, Russell Martin was still able to name a strong looking side which included three strikers in Piroe, Liam Cullen and former Saints man Michael Obafemi.
