The number of cases recorded on Wednesday is a 21 per cent rise on the 39,716 cases recorded yesterday and a 10 per cent rise on the 43,676 cases reported on Wednesday last week.
The number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test is also a rise on the 159 recorded on Tuesday and the 149 deaths recorded this time last week.
The latest daily figures also show a total of 50,994,257 first doses of Covid-19 vaccine had been delivered in the UK by November 30, This is a rise of 30,539 on the previous day.
Some 46,399,306 second doses have also been delivered, an increase of 32,157.
A combined total of 18,608,124 booster and third doses have also been given, a day-on-day rise of 392,589.
The Omicron variant has now been reported in 23 countries.
