GREEN-fingered youngsters at a Barrow school are showing their support for Ukraine.
Gemma Sadler, a teacher at St Pius X Catholic Primary School, said they had been ‘deeply saddened’ as they watched events unfold this month as the country comes under attack from Russian forces.
The Little Lambs Nursery teacher explained a parent volunteer came up with a cheerful way of showing support to Ukraine while raising money.
She said: “Our gardening club parent volunteer had come up with the idea of planting sunflower seeds.
“Our Little Lambs have been working very hard planting sunflowers.
“With the help of our volunteer parent gardener Natalie Bain and our school council we aim to plant 230 sunflowers.
“In addition to this our gardening club leader will also be trying their hand at baking and selling cakes decorated with sunflowers.”
Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine and yesterday they aimed to send every child in the school home with a sunflower to care for and grow.
