A penchant for lockdown pursuits during the pandemic may have kept hospitals as busy as the people doing them, NHS figures reveal.
As the nation has faced repeated lockdowns and restrictions, many have turned to DIY, pet purchases or new hobbies.
But the drive to keep busy, stay active and engaged has left thousands of people needing hospital care.
Data from NHS Digital for 2020/21 in England show more than 5,600 people were admitted to hospital after coming into contact with a power tool and more than 2,700 were admitted after an incident with a non-powered tool such as a hammer or saw.
Even venturing into the garden or park came with risks as there were 349 hospital admissions for lawnmower injuries, 962 for injuries from climbing trees, 153 for sun burn and more than 5,300 for falling from playground equipment, of which dozens were people over the age of 30 and eight were over the age of 90.
Pets proved a problem too. Lockdown puppy purchases rocketed but the pandemic pooch has not always brought joy.
