Monty Don, 67, has been the lead host of Gardeners’ World for more than a decade and appears on Britons’ TV screens most weeks. Last week, the gardening expert shared exactly how to plant crocus bulbs now ready for flowers come February.
Monty decided to plant the crocus bulbs in a trough which previously had thyme in it. He explained: “Now, this stone trough had thyme in it all summer, and I must confess the thyme has all died because it is very very shallow and even Mediterranean herbs like thyme need some water.
“I confess I haven’t watered them once throughout the blazing heat of this summer.
“However, it’s given me an opportunity because I’m going to plant crocus in here. The variety I’m using is sublimis tricolor. It’s purple with white and orange, hence the tricolour [name].”
Each of the bulbs has got a little shoot which needs to be sticking upwards when planted. Monty clarified, “pointy end up always”.
