Throw in three trademark batting collapses in as many innings to start the tour and it’s all looking like a great English trainwreck with ‘whitewash’ written all over it.
To the surprise of precisely no one, England is 2-0 down in the Ashes and still looking for its first Test win in Australia in more than a decade.
Front and back newspaper pages and websites, both home and abroad, are filled with brutally honest criticism to remind us of that.
But it’s worth reminding ourselves on this, another sorry day for English Test cricket, that Joe Root’s side didn’t just lose the first two Tests of the Ashes.
