Cases of Covid-19 in the Balearic Islands, which have been demoted to the amber list this week, have surpassed figures reported in countries on the red list.
The latest data from the Spanish islands, including Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca, shows the current seven-day case rate is 329 per 100,000. By comparison, the figure in Turkey is 50, in India it’s 19 and in the United Arab Emirates the figure is 108 – all three sit on the UK’s red list, meaning returning Britons face a costly stay in a quarantine hotel. The UK’s own case rate is 385 per 100,000.
On Wednesday Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced the Balearics would be reclassified from green to amber, amid this surge. However many holidaymakers still plan to visit, especially those who are double-jabbed and, from Monday, will no longer need to isolate at home on their return.
