Ever wondered why any fruit has failed to grow on your trees years after planting them?
Gardening expert Dave The Plantman (@davetheplatman) has the answer – pointing out on TikTok a key sign everyone should take note of when purchasing a tree to continue growing themselves at home. In a video outlining how to cut down small trees, Dave began by revealing a crucial aspect of horticulture.
Zooming in on the bottom of the tree, he explains: “If you look at this plum tree, you’ll notice there’s no funny wound at the bottom. Now, what you’re looking for when you’re buying a fruit tree is a leg coming up and another dog-leg coming off it.”
Dave adds that such legs means you have a “dwarfing rootstock”, which produce the smallest trees and range from six feet tall to 12 to 14 feet tall. He says: “What a dwarfing rootstock will do is it will only let it get a third of the size of this [tree] and it’ll get covered in plums.”
