However, there’s one canine behaviour that could be misinterpreted – and it’s crucial for dog owners to understand. When a dog lifts its leg up, particularly while lying down, many assume it’s an open invitation for a belly rub.

Yet, a dog trainer from Doggi in Brisbane, Australia, has revealed that this common interpretation is often incorrect. This body language signal is frequently misunderstood by pet owners.

The assumption that a dog lifting its leg when lying down is asking for a stomach pet or scratch isn’t always accurate, and it’s vital to consider other possibilities.

“It’s important to think about their pack position and the energy they’re giving off,” the trainer advised. Highlighting a case with Miller, a “sensitive and back of the pack dog”, she demonstrated the point.
