An investigation has been launched after a Shar Pei was left with horrific neck, head and jaw wounds after being mauled in a Hamilton park.
Owner Duncan Nicolson was walking Baxter in Bothwell Road Park on Sunday evening when they stumbled across the out-of-control dog.
The 62-year-old battled to free his pet from the jaws of the Mastiff-type dog with several passersby rushing to help.
The shocking attack, which lasted around five minutes, left the four-year-old dog with gaping wounds before he was rushed to an emergency vet.
The incident has been reported to Police Scotland the local dog warden but Duncan has now issued a warning to other pet owners to be alert.
He said: “It was about 7pm on Sunday and I was just walking through the park with Baxter. He was a wee bit hyped up because he had seen some squirrels and he likes to chase them.
