You may not think a kidney cake with pea and carrot decoration sounds very appetising, but if you happen to be a dog on Merseyside, it’s likely to be top of your wishlist – thanks to an enterprising baker named Celia McDonald.
Celia is the driving force behind For Dogs’ Sake Treats, an online outfit based in Liverpool offering healthy artisan training treats and cakes based on her own pet Bella’s need to avoid shop-bought food.
After earlier careers as an architect and then a rehabilitation worker for the blind, Celia’s canine cookery focus began when she and her husband adopted Bella, a black miniature Goldendoodle, after years of fostering guide dogs.

At puppy-training class they were advised that pieces of hotdog made better training treats than store-bought bags, but that didn’t sound much of a healthy alternative, so Celia investigated other options and made a livercake treat instead.
