In an alert notice issued on July 2, the UK Food Standards Agency said dog food would have to be recalled after salmonella was found in certain products which experts say could potentially risk human health.
The bug is relatively harmless to dogs however pets can infect their owners due to it being a zoonotic disease – meaning it can be passed from animals to humans.
However, salmonella causes the bacterial disease salmonellosis which can be life-threatening when humans are involved.
Symptoms in humans include:
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Stomach pains
- Cramps
The recall notice said some of Natural Instinct Ltd dog food products containing duck were among the batches recalled because the bug had been found in the products.
The affected batches are now being recalled with customers urged to return them for their money back.
Advice from the FSA reads: “If you have bought any of the products do not use them. Instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.
