A government scientific adviser has said there is a “glimmer of hope” over the Indian variant of Covid-19 that has sparked alarm in the UK.
Professor Neil Ferguson said the variant “does still appear to have a significant growth advantage” but that the magnitude of this “seems to have dropped a little bit” in recent data.
In Bolton, a surge in infection rates has been put down to this variant, which was first identified in India and has since spread to the UK.
The Tory leader of the council warned on Wednesday there could be “unrest” if a local lockdown is imposed.
In travel news, a government minister said people should make up their own mind whether to travel to amber list countries for holidays under Covid-19 regulations amid confusion over travel advice.
Gillian Keegan said whether to follow guidelines or not was a matter of “personal responsibility”.
