The UK Fashion DEI Report, published today (23 January 2024), is a first-of-its-kind review of DEI in the UK fashion industry. It is based on the findings from the UK Fashion DEI Census, launched by the BFC in August 2023 and other new data from management consultancy firm McKinsey & Co.
Launched this morning at an event at London’s Barbican Centre attended by brands including Burberry and Hugo Boss, the report found that only 9% of executive and board roles in the UK fashion industry are held by people of colour, and only 39% by women.
Only 11% of “power roles” – which the report defines as CEO, CFO, chairman and creative director – are held by people of colour, and only 24% by women.
It found that while 86% of white men in the industry believe the industry is diverse, only 46% of women of colour believe the industry is diverse.
Only 17% of companies have published quantitative DEI targets – far fewer than the 56% that have published sustainability targets.
