A VOLUNTEER gardening group has transformed an area of derelict land into an attractive space, while tackling social isolation.
Beck Bottom Community Garden Group, based in Hensingham, Whitehaven, is run by a small group of volunteers who share a passion for gardening and take great pride in the upkeep of the area.
Members meet up every Saturday morning at 10am (weather permitting) to carry out gardening duties and general upkeep of the area.
The group has helped transform a derelict area of former parkland at Beck Bottom into a cared for and attractive green space accessible to all. Members have planted seasonal formal flower beds, rose beds, wildflower meadow areas and blossom trees to attract birds, bees, butterflies, insects and other wildlife.
They have also constructed their own composting area so they can recycle all of the gardening waste and practise organic gardening.
