It can’t be easy being the head of a major client with a shrinking budget, working in a business that has had its very foundations shaken by the changing travel habits brought about by COVID-19.
If those aren’t big enough issues for Andrew Haines to deal with, he is also leading an organisation that will not exist beyond 2023, with Network Rail set to be replaced by the new Great British Railways (GBR). In the meantime, his in-tray is filled with many responsibilities: keeping the railways operating efficiently and safely, maintaining track workers’ safety, ensuring renewals are up to date and implementing a redundancy programme.
