CEO of trade body Scottish Business UK, Struan Stevenson, explained to Express.co.uk that Scotland has “a lot going for it” and has fairly lucrative business sectors which aid the nation greatly. But he added those combined would not be enough to fund an independent Scotland as they remain subject to large portions of Westminster funding which sees, per head, Scots receiving £2,000 more than their English counterparts. Mr Stevenson questioned whether Scottish independence was the right thing economically speaking when the infrastructure does not appear to support the move.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Stevenson was asked about North Sea oil and the SNP’s desire to use it to fund an independent Scotland.
However, with the move to a greener world, the fall in oil prices and the SNP’s collaboration with the Greens have thrown that option into disarray.
Mr Stevenson was asked if not oil then what could fund an independent Scotland.
He replied: “Scotland does, of course, have a lot of things going for it.
