By 2008 Pastor John says he had done almost everything society expected of him.
He was a director of a hugely successful international business, he had a wife, and his second child was on the way.
But the now father-of-four said something significant was missing in his life. He’d had a difficult childhood growing up in north London and despite his successes in the corporate world he felt a “broken man”.

John-Edward Funnell moved to Gwent to be with family at 18, motivated to “prove doubters wrong and right past trauma”.
“I grew up in a difficult and non-religious household,” he said, talking from Noddfa Church in Abersychan, Torfaen, where he is now pastor of a very popular church.
“I’d missed a large chunk of my education so I sat my exams here and did okay, went to college and university and got a good degree.
