Public anger is mounting as we wait to hear whether Ministers will follow through on proposals to raise the age for automatic free NHS prescriptions to 66, in line with the State Pension age. Currently, they are free for everybody from age 60, so millions more could pay.
The Prescription Charges Coalition, which is fighting the change, has dubbed the increase as a “tax on health”.
Age UK called it a “bitter pill to swallow for millions” and Express readers have responded with even greater anger.
Reader Roman III called the move “ridiculous” and said the Government “shouldn’t be moving the goalposts, if you get free now it should carry on”.
Another reader, val@George, said: “The worrying thing about this fiasco is that many people will simply stop taking the drugs.”
And norbert58 said: “Shouldn’t have to pay at all. Disgusting!”
Alison2015 said many readers are getting the wrong end of the stick. “If you work and are on low wage you will still qualify for free prescriptions.”
