In September, St Helens Council put out a tender notice that sought bids to supply and install solar panels on the roof of the former Selywn Jones Leisure Centre on Ashton Road.
With a £4.2 million transformation unveiled in 2019, Newton Health and Fitness Centre offers residents with a state-of-the-art gym, an exercise and cycling studio, a swimming pool, and adventure play centre.
The council also approved plans for a new 3G football pitch at the leisure centre earlier this year, and proposals have now been put forward to install solar panels on the facility’s roof.
This will help mitigate some of the expensive running costs of the facility, while and the council is also looking to install more green infrastructure across local-authority owned buildings.
