Research has shown that Bath was home to more than 20% of all new businesses formed in the South West between 2020 and 2021.
The research, which was compiled by the House of Commons Library, shows that the number of businesses registered in Bath increased by 90 in the twelve-month period.
In the South West, 425 new businesses were registered, meaning that 21% of the growth was in the Bath area.
The city achieved the figure despite making up less than 2% of the population of the South West.
The UK economy has struggled in recent years, hampered by the effects of the pandemic and Brexit.
One local business success story is Naturbeads, a spin-off business from the University of Bath, which is producing biodegradable, plant-based microbeads to replace plastic alternatives in many types of cosmetics.
The company has secured millions of pounds in funding from Sky Ocean ventures, Innovate UK and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
