The death of a toddler who was fatally mauled by his family’s dog has sparked calls for dangerous pet breeds to be banned.
Talan Peters, two, suffered serious head injuries and died in hospital after being attacked at his family’s home in remote Mena Creek, near Cairns in far north Queensland, on Saturday afternoon.
He was airlifted to Townsville Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He was later placed in an induced coma and died on Monday.
Australians have thrown their support behind his mother Amber Stewart and father James Peters, with more than $20,000 raised to help the family grieve through an online fundraiser set up on Tuesday.
The breed of dog that mauled the two-year-old has yet to be revealed.
