As of today, residents under the age of 22 living in Scotland can now apply for a free bus pass through a devolved Government scheme. This travel concession is available to all children and young people with a new National Entitlement Card (NEC) or Young Scot NEC. The Scottish NEC is a smart card which is administered Local Authorities in the country on behalf of the Scottish Government. It is designed to offer discounts to young people.
According to the Scottish Government, tens of thousands of young people have already applied and received their new card.
The free bus pass is administered through the NEC and all cardholders are able to start travelling for free on bus services across the country from January 31 if they are under the age of 22.
It should be noted that the free bus pass for under 22s only applies to those with a new NEC; anyone with an older iteration of the smartcard will not be able to access the concession.
