The UK used to be involved in the EU pet passport scheme, which provided an affordable way to take pets on holiday to EU countries.
However, due to the UK government’s Brexit deal, many animal-loving travellers are out of pocket after being frozen out of the scheme at the start of this year.
The new system requires owners to obtain an animal health certificate (AHC) each and every time they travel to the EU, which can cost up to £250 a time and is valid for up to four months for a single trip.
But luckily, there’s another way for holidaymakers who frequently take their animal companions to France to obtain a valid pet passport. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is an EU pet passport?
European pet passports are essential for travel within the European Union (EU). They are issued by authorised veterinarians and contain the following information:
-
Description and details of your pet
-
Your pet’s microchip or tattoo code
-
Your pet’s rabies vaccination record
-
Contact details of the vet who issued the passport
-
Contact details of the pet’s owner
