A long-standing derelict piece of land on Derby’s ring road is to become home to the city’s fifth Lidl discount store.
Councillors have finally given the go-ahead for the company to build on a key gateway site into Derby at the corner of Talbot Street and Uttoxeter New Road.
They were satisfied that a more traditional design, after a previous refusal for an application submitted by Aldi on design and highways grounds, was an improvement.
Planning officer Paul Clarke told a meeting of the city council’s planning control committee: “This enhances the design quality and presence of the development in this gateway location and preserves the setting and significance of the nearby listed buildings on the former Friar Gate Goods Yard.
“The highways implications of the proposal are also considered to be acceptable.”
Councillor Mike Carr said that “it was a much better design” and clearly the company had taken “previous architectural comments on board”.
