A Hull maths teacher can add Great British Sewing Bee challenge winner to his credits after romping to victory in the first tricky transformation round of the new series.
Andrew Aspland, 54, is up against 11 more amateur stitchers from around the country in the seventh series of BBC One’s popular crafting show, The Great British Sewing Bee (GBSB), that launched on Wednesday, April 14.
He was introduced to viewers for the first time on the programme that has seen a huge uptick in sales of sewing machines, fabric and equipment since it first launched in 2013.
GBSB’s “meet the sewers” post on Facebook says sewing has been a part of Andrew’s life since he was a small boy, watching his mother and grandmother making their own garments.
The teacher claims to be something of a “magpie”, drawn to bold fabrics and eye-catching menswear designs, and his hobbies also extend to bellringing or making stained-glass windows, when he is not making vestments for his partner Paul, who is a priest, or a new shirt for himself.
